Travelling around Ireland
|
Firstly, if you’re not Irish, everything you’ve heard about driving in Ireland is not true (well, not true anymore). Over the past decade, Ireland has been dragged kicking and screaming into the modern motorway age, making places like our bed and breakfast easily accessible from everywhere.
This means that the days of spending days travelling between two points are finally over. IT also means that you’re never too far away from Kilbawn bed and breakfast kilkenny

|
However, once off the motorways, you are back on to the roads that made us famous. While well maintained in the most part, some are quite narrow, some are have no markings, and yes some have grass growing up the middle (see picture below). It’s actually not as bad as you think, you’ll get used to it pretty quickly.

|
If you think you’ve mastered the art and have had your brave pills, take a spin along Conor Pass, a road linking Dingle and Tralee Co. Kerry. An narrow, windy, alpine road with some of the best scenery in Ireland along the way.
|

|
Taking a tour around the secondary roads, winding through village after village is a great way to see the country, stopping here and there along the way. Be careful to leave yourself enough time though.

Some quick driving tips:
We drive on the left. Most of the time.
If you’re arriving from abroad, hiring a car is cheap and is still the easiest way to get around
Public transport is getting much better than it used to be. The train from Dublin to Kilkenny takes about 90 minutes, and bed and breakfast is serviced by both the Bus Eireann and Kavanagh’s bus services from Dublin to Waterford, both of which stop outside the door.
When hiring a car, save yourself the confusion of reading maps of Irish roads, and get sat nav
If you’re travelling from the United States, make sure if you usually drive an automatic car back home, to specify an auto when hiring. The majority of rentals in Ireland are manual transmission
Motorways are denoted by ‘M’ (M50, M1, M9), National roads by ‘N’ and regional roads by ‘R’
Our Bed and Breakfast Kilkenny is located about 10 minutes off the M9 Motorway, on the side of the N9. Easy, I hear you say.
Driving under the influence of alcohol is not cool anymore.
Many of the motorway tolls are around €2 and some are barrier free, which you should pay before the end of the next day
We can help you with any directions while you’re here at Kilbawn bed and breakfast kilkenny, so don’t be shy to ask us for help or suggestions!
