Jerpoint Abbey
|
google maps reference
|
Like Duiske Abbey, Jerpoint was also a Cistercian Abbey, founded in the 12 century. Situated just 9km away from the bed and breakfast, close by Mount Juliet Golf and Spa Hotel, it lay in ruin after Henry VII announced the dissolution of all Catholic monasteries around 1540 and has been maintained by the Office of Public works since 1880.
The monastery was a powerful one, and the Abbot of Duiske would have sat in the parliament of the day.

There is a local legend with says that nearby Jerpoint Abbey, there are ruins believed to contain the burial site of St Nicholas himself (yes, that’s Santa Claus to you and I).
