Located in the middle of the main street of Gowran, just 5 minutes drive from the bed and breakfast, St Mary’s church was built around 1260. It is designated a National Monument and is currently maintained by the Office of Public Works (OPW).
St Mary’s, is a large and elaborate church, with much architectural excellence throughout, from it’s aisled nave to the unique long chancel (the space around the altar at the top of the church).

Many of the early Butler family which lived in Kilkeny Castle are buried here and indeed one very well reserved effigy of a noble man is thought to be that of the 1st Earl of Ormonde.
St Marys is another collegiate church, as it was served by a "college" of clerics who lived close-by in a community but who did not live by normal monastery rules.

A large tower was built between the chancel and nave around the end of the Middle Ages. More recently (the 1800’s) the tower was made part of a new parish church built on the site.
